Typically the Replicator Service is started automatically at operating system startup or after running the installer for initial installation or an update.
You also can start and stop the Data Replicator service from the Windows Services Control Panel, using the Windows sc command, or using PowerShell commands such Start-Service (Windows), or with appropriate Linux commands (see Linux: Starting and stopping the service).
Starting the Replicator Manager will automatically start the Replicator Service on a local Windows computer only if the Replicator Manager is run as elevated (Run as Administrator).
The service appears in the left pane of the Replicator Manager window as the computer name or as the Friendly Name entered during configuration. Closing the Replicator Manager does not automatically stop the Replicator Service, as the Replicator Service must be running for it to monitor and run scheduled replications and, if SQDR Plus is deployed, poll the source databases for incremental updates.
Should you need to stop the Replicator service, select the Stop Service command, after which you can select the Start Service command when you are ready to re-start the service again. The Stop Service and Start Service commands are available from the Service menu of the Replicator Manager, or by selecting the computer name and right-clicking to display a context menu. Starting the service from within the Data Replicator Management application only applies to a local (Windows) service and requires the application to be run as elevated i.e. "Run as Administrator".
When you select Stop Service, a dialog appears that allows you to specify a wait time for completion. Default is 30 (seconds); maximum is 300. A value of 0 specifies an immediate shutdown.
The Replicator Service must be running to manage the sources, destinations, and subscriptions that appear in the Replication Manager. Stopping the Replicator Service, either from the Replicator Manager or the Windows Services Control Panel, cancels any snapshot replication operations that are in progress, and pauses incremental replication operations.
To run replications at a scheduled time, the Replicator Service must be running at the time the scheduled replications are to begin.
The icon next to the service indicates whether the service is running or stopped, as shown in the following table.
